This is a 30×24 acrylic on canvas painting with gold and silver leaf accents. On Christmas night, I went to take the dog out before bed, and noticed the full moon shining through the maple tree in our back yard. The way the naked branches framed the beautiful full moon was just magical. The corona around the moon and the brightly lit windows on the dark hill only added to the effect.
I have a tendency to get in the weeds trying to get every little detail just right on paintings – especially from photos – so I’ve been wanting to challenge myself to try to paint my impression of a scene rather than a realistic and detailed. This was the perfect subject. It took a couple attempts, but I think I got there.
To make the moon, stars and windows really stand out from the dark backdrop, I added gold and silver foil. I also learned that you have to seal the silver or it tarnishes and turns colors. I re-silvered (and sealed) the moon, but I mostly kept the stars as is. I kind of liked the multi-colored effect. I did seal them, however.
