This is a 16×20 acrylic on canvas painting I did of a window inside Ft. Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island, SC. While visiting Charleston with the kids we toured Ft. Moultrie, a Revolutionary War era military base. I have long been enamored of interesting doors and windows. There were some really creepy/melancholy spots during our tour. The kind of spots that, if you didn’t know their context, would swear could be straight out of some gothic story. This window had such a melancholy feel to it – with the dark walls and corners and one bright, although only semi-transparent, window.
This was very different from my other brightly colored, highly detailed subjects, thus far, and I decided it was the perfect quick palette (get it?) cleanser before starting my next piece. I decided to play out the light and shadow, deepening the gloom around the window. I ended up very happy with it. Kind of has an Old World feel to it. I think I’ll tackle one of the other photos of a forlorn staircase and doorway from the same location.
