This is a 24×20 acrylic on canvas painting I did of Iris Apfel based on a Sebastian Kim photograph. I love Iris Apfel. I love everything about her. Her wit. Her longevity, her “zero effs to give” sense of style. She’s a boss bee, and she’s fantastic. I knew I wanted to paint her, but I needed to find THE photo that I’d paint. This image by photographer Sebastian Kim was it. What’s not to love? The bright red fun fur jacket. The huge, colorful, chunky beads and bangles. The beautiful scarf. Her red nails. And all on a stark white background. I opted not to do the caraffe, because, well, I’m the artist, and I didn’t feel like it. The whole piece was a study in problem-solving, but her hands presented the biggest challenge. Hands are hard…I think any artist will tell you that. So far, it’s been one of my more popular pieces.
