This is a 30×24 acrylic on canvas painting of a really interesting hallway and brick stairs at Ft. Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island, SC.  While visiting Charleston with the kids we toured Ft. Moultrie, a Revolutionary War era military base.  One of the passage ways we explored had this really neat entry way when we left.  The contrast between the darkness of the interior with the the brightly lit stucco heading outside struck me, and I captured it with my camera, and now my paint brushes.

Inspired by Bruce Herman’s Magnificat, I felt the painting really called for some gold leaf on the interior arch to offset the darkness of the walls.  This was my first attempt at gold leaf, and I’m quite pleased with the results.  The whole piece evokes in me a sense of being in a dark place and moving forward towards better times.
