This is a 24″x24″ acrylic and mixed media piece on prepared cradled wood panel.
I had this idea while, no surprise, enjoying some sangria on a warm day. The title comes from lyrics in Tori Amos’ song “Sweet Sangria.” Our wine of choice at the time was Goliath, and I absolutely fell in love with the rooster label. I decided to do a mixed media piece and wanted to use actual labels, but I quickly realized that would not really be cost effective – especially since I couldn’t cleanly peel even one. So, I found an image of the label, printed it on thermal mailing labels, and cut them out, affixing them to the board using gel medium.
I set about getting the fruits I wanted depicted, made a great batch of sangria in our pot belly pitcher, and then reserved some fruit for the actual painting. It took quite a while to get everything right, and I’m *still* not really happy with the angle on the tray, but overall I’m very pleased with how it turned out.
Best of all? I got to drink the sangria and eat the fruit!
