This is a 30″x30″ mixed media piece on canvas depicting a bouquet of flowers on a background of vintage ephemera, textile, and gold leaf.
I’ve wanted to start working more with collage and paint for a while. After creating “Beauty and the Bees” and “It Is Well With My Soul,” I decided to create a piece that incorporated both paper ephemera and textile.
For this particular piece I was inspired by the bouquet I purchased from our farmer’s market from Season’s Beauty Farm. My husband and I were preparing for a vow renewal service for our 25th anniversary, and they made me not one, but two beautiful bouquets.
Unfortunately, due to my procrastination the flowers had largely wilted by the time I got around to actually putting paint on canvas, so I took another trip to the farmer’s market and purchased 3 more bouquets which I used to create the bouquet in the painting (the rest were used to adorn our kitchen island).
The vintage paper ephemera is largely from France, some of it over 100 years old. The textured portion is woven netting material, which I’ve painted over. To tie the two halves of the canvas together, I lifted up some of the netting, and extended the ephemera background a little bit underneath. To finish the piece, I took sheets of gold leaf and gently brushed them over adhesive areas on the netting to give it a bit of shimmer.
I was very pleased with the end result, and wanted to create a campanion piece in blue which I entitled “Rêverie en Bleu.”
